The Big Pit National Coal Museum

The Big Pit National Coal Museum was a real coal mine until the 1980s. Today the attraction has been transformed into the leading mining museums in the country and offers an educational and entertaining, suitable for all ages.

A visit to Big Pit should last at least 3 or 4 hours. The buildings of the houses of the miners can also visit the Fan House, Blacksmith's Forge, Stables and the engine room. An audiovisual presentation of 20 minutes duration introduces visitors to the world of the mine through a miner who performed their daily work in a replica of an actual mine. You can experience for yourself the feeling of being in a mine.

You can also visit the Pithead Baths, newly renovated showers, where miners washed and prepared for work. But the most impressive of the visit is to tour underground, for which, of course, must wear a helmet with a flashlight before descending 100 meters into the mine and the rail. The tour lasts an hour and has the best guides that can be ex-miners and the mine employees who formerly worked there. If you need a rest, the museum has a cafe, a bar, a gift shop and free parking.
